Dar es Salaam — the name comes from Arabic and is usually translated as “haven of peace” — grew from a nineteenth-century harbour settlement into Tanzania’s largest city and its commercial capital. Layer on layer of history is visible in a single morning: Swahili and Omani beginnings, German and then British administration, the independence era, and the enormous, restless growth of the past few decades.
The day is planned around the traffic rather than against it, with museums in the quieter hours and markets when they are at their liveliest. It ends by the ocean, on the Msasani side of the city, where the pace drops and the breeze picks up. National Museum and House of Culture
Tanzania’s national collection, covering human origins — including material from Olduvai Gorge — the Swahili coast, the colonial period and independence. An hour or two here makes sense of much of what you see elsewhere.

Village Museum
An open-air site on the edge of the city with traditional dwellings built in the styles of different Tanzanian peoples, plus craft demonstrations and, on some days, music and dance. Good for children and for a break from traffic.

Kariakoo Market
A vast, dense, thoroughly local market spilling across many streets: produce, spices, fabric, hardware, everything. It is intense and crowded — we go in with your guide, keep to the main routes and leave valuables in the vehicle.

Kivukoni fish market
Beside the harbour entrance, where the catch is landed, auctioned, filleted and grilled. Busiest in the morning, and the best place in the city to watch people work.

Askari Monument and St Joseph’s Cathedral
A short walk in the old centre: the Askari Monument, which commemorates the African soldiers and porters who served in the First World War, and the Gothic-style Catholic cathedral of St Joseph on the waterfront, built in the German period.

Harbour and the Msasani waterfront
A drive along the harbour, with views of the ferries and dhows, then out to the Msasani peninsula and Coco Beach for a sea breeze, a cold drink and, in the late afternoon, a good sunset.
