Mountains & Adventure

Climb Kilimanjaro, trek Mount Meru or hike the Ngorongoro highlands.

Mount Kilimanjaro, at approximately 5,895 m, is the highest mountain in Africa and one of the world’s great treks. No technical climbing skills are needed, but it is a real high-altitude challenge that rewards good preparation and a well-paced route.

For those who want something shorter, Mount Meru near Arusha is a beautiful trek in its own right and good acclimatisation for Kilimanjaro, while the Ngorongoro highlands offer walks with views over craters and Maasai grazing land.

What to expect

  • A licensed mountain guide with a support team of assistant guides, porters and a cook
  • Camping or, on the Marangu route, hut accommodation
  • Several climate zones, from rainforest to alpine desert and the icy summit
  • A long summit night, usually starting around midnight, to reach the top near sunrise
  • Daily health checks by your guides and a focus on slow, steady progress
  • The option to combine your climb with a safari or a beach break

Our tips

  • Choose a longer route where you can — extra days on the mountain improve acclimatisation and your chance of reaching the summit.
  • Train with regular long walks, ideally on hills and in the boots you will wear.
  • Check that your travel insurance covers trekking to approximately 6,000 m, including helicopter evacuation.
  • See your doctor before booking and discuss altitude and any existing health conditions.
  • “Pole pole” — slowly, slowly — is the best advice you will hear on the mountain.
